Art Mentor: California College of the Arts

This is was a project I was involved with through a community arts class at the California College of the Arts in Oakland. We teamed up with middle school students at Arts Far West across the street from our campus to make moduar mural pieces. The theme, decided by the young students was respect in the community. Each young student worked with one college student to make a painting. We pushed the students to articulate their own ideas related to respect and offered them technical and artistic help. It turned out to be quite a revealing process, whereas students opened up and shared personal stories, environmental concerns, and related their ideas to historic people and events. I became very excited about what was happening and returend to help during subsequent classes.
